Everybody has shitty days. They’re unavoidable. But everybody reacts differently to them. Recently I came across this quote: “You never have to do today again”. And I think that’s an excellent way of looking at it.
Today only comes once
Here’s the full quote:
“Someone I used to date would always say “You never have to do today again” after a bad day, and honestly, that really helps. You did today. Good job. It wasn’t easy. Tomorrow may not be easy either, but at least it won’t be today.”
Very interesting way of looking at it.
Most people go “Damn today was bad, I hope tomorrow won’t be this bad”.
They stick to the negative outlook.
This quote is different however. It’s like taking a deep breath, picking yourself back up and moving on to tomorrow. Today is done.
This relates to social skills too
You might be wondering how this relates to social skills and social confidence.
Well, you can pretty much replace “today” with “that conversation” and it’s a perfect fit.
Some conversations won’t be easy. They’ll be awkward and have weird silences. You won’t know what to say to keep a conversation going. Or you’ll be stuck with somebody who just keeps talking without end.
At some point even that shitty conversation will end.
Your next conversation might not be easy either, but at least it won’t be the one you just had.
Reflect – what went well?
Adopting this “breath of fresh air” mindset also helps you in reflecting on the conversation.
What went well? What did you do right? What can you keep doing in the next conversation? What would you like to change?
Just reflect on it a little and if you’re really meticulous about it; write it down for future reference.
Maybe it was today
Maybe you had a shitty day today. Maybe it was a shitty week even.
Or maybe you had an awkward conversation. It could have been a really tough conversation where you had to relay bad news.
But at least it’s done and you don’t have to do that conversation or that day again.
Good job. It wasn’t easy, but you did on.
Here’s to a better conversation/day tomorrow!
